Damon Revealed II

Damon Revealed II, 2005

Intrigued by a lithographic engraving from 1853, by B.H.Baker of Musuidora, sculpted by R.J. Wyatt (ca 1840), I discovered The Seasons, by 18th century poet James Thomson. In one of the books of the poem, Summer, I was introduced to the story of Damon and Musidora, where, on a hot summer day the youthful Damon accidentally happens upon his love, the beautiful Musidora bathing naked in the coolness of a shaded stream. Wyatt's sculpted Musidora pose captures her discovering Damon. As the viewer approaches the box, the reflection of Musidora in the mirror beckons. It is not until the viewer looks straight on - into the box and mirror that he/she is revealed to Musidora.
